Today’s sweets: Taiyaki (たい焼,たいやき)

By Yoshi, November 10, 2010

“Taiyaki”(literally “baked sea bream) is a Japanese fish-shaped cake.
It’s made by using regular pancake or waffle batter.

The batter is poured into a fish-shaped mold for each side. The filling is then put on one side and the mold is closed. It is then cooked on both sides until golden brown.
The most common filling is “Azuki (red bean paste)”. Other common fillings are chocolate, custard, cheese, or a sausage. Some shop have “Okonomiaki Taiyaki”, “Takoyaki Taitaki”.

Sometimes we talk about how to eat it.
It means “eating the head first or the tail at first.

I eat…. the head first!

Well, more than 30 years ago, a song about “Taiyaki” became a huge hit.
The song was from a TV program for children.
The title is “Oyoge Taiyaki-kun (Swim! Taiyaki)”. The video is here on Youtube.

Could you understand the lyric?
The summary is that one Taiyaki, “Taiyaki-kun”, ran away from a shop. He jumped into the sea and was enjoying in the sea. One day he was hungry and ate something. it was a fishhook… A man fished “Taiyaki-kun” and ate him…..

What a sad story….. XD
Why did it become a huge hit???
