Day trip from Tokyo: Hakone vol.2

By Yoshi, December 10, 2010

This hell vally is called “Owakudani” (おおわくだに, 大涌谷). “Owakudani” is the area around a crater created during the last eruption of Mount Hakone some 3000 years ago. Today, much of the area is an active volcanic zone where sulfurous fumes, hot springs and hot rivers can be experienced.

Once known as “Oojigoku” (hell), or grand hell, it was renamed “Oowakudani” before the Meiji emperor’s visit in 1876 since it was not a good for the Emperor to visit a place called “hell”.

“Owakudani” is accessible by Tozan Train, Cablecar, and ropeway from Hakone-yumoto station. “Hakone Freepass” includes these fares. (please check “Hakone vol:1” as well.)

We can see a great view of Mt.Fuji there on clear days!

And “Black eggs” (黒たまご, くろたまご) boiled by these hot srings, are sold there.

It is said that you can live 7 years longer by eating one egg.

I ate two this time, I can live 14 years longer? :)
